The contract system in the base game always felt a little luck-dependent, but with the navigation board you can actually plan a route and hunt down deals that fit your ship. My table's games have been way tighter since we added this.
The new contract system is such a relief, no more sitting there stuck with a hand that doesn't fit your ship. Traveling around the board to pick up jobs actually gives me something to do on turns where I'd normally just pass.
The navigation board finally means I'm not stuck waiting on contracts that don't fit my ship, which happened constantly in the base game. Flying around to different spots to pick up jobs adds a nice bit of planning to every turn.
